Next to his deadly duels with men like Sasaki Kojirō and the Yoshioka brothers, throughout his active life, Musashi engaged in countless (friendly) bouts with practitioners of a great variety of disciplines. Most of them have not been recorded, they were just another practice round, at some venue, or at one of the many dōjo at which Musashi taught throughout his life.

Luckily, a number of the more remarkable bouts have been preserved for posterity and for us to enjoy and draw inspiration from. These bouts have been carefully collected on the following pages.

Muso Gonnosuke and Musashi Kunichika (1835-1900)
